A fund that helps local families fighting cancer received a big boost last week when a former Winfield resident donated $5,000 and pledged to donate another $5,000 each of the next two years. Former Winfield resident Jamie Broadhurst presented a check to David Seaton, president of Winfield Publishing, Saturday at the Legacy Regional Community Foundation office in Winfield
.
Broadhurst's gift was made to the Shannon Seaton Memorial Fund, which is being managed by Legacy. Seaton died April 20 of this year from inflammatory breast cancer after a two year battle. She was married with three young children. The fund was started in May of this year to honor Shannon's legacy of bringing comfort and kindness to her friends and neighbors. It will provide assistance to Cowley County families struggling to pay their bills because of cancer treatment.
"I find funding for families that have lost loved ones to cancer is vital and often overlooked," Broadhurst said "I can’t imagine losing a loved one to cancer and then coming home to a stack of medical bills you simply can’t pay." Broadhurst, owner of Elite Staff, LLC, in Kansas City, Kan. credited his hometown and mother, Dixie, for showing him the importance of giving back. "I love Winfield and all the friendly people that rally around a bad situation," Broadhurst said. "Very thankful to have been raised there. Thanks, Mom … and Winfield!"
Broadhurst's gift and pledge moves the fund closer to its fundraising goals so that it can start helping families soon, David Seaton said. "I am so thankful to my friend and high school classmate for his generosity," Seaton said. "It's been very humbling to see the outpouring of charity in Shannon's name for this very important cause. Battling cancer is hard enough without the financial fears adding to the anxiety."
