At least five people were hurt after a wind gust broke a large tree limb off a tree, sending the tree into a crowd at a Winfield swim meet.

According to Winfield Fire Chief Alan Stoll, around 4:30p.m., crews were called to the Winfield Aquatic Center on north Main, near Island Park, after someone called 911 reporting a tree fell on several people.

When crews arrived on scene, several bystanders were trying to lift a large branch off those trapped underneath it.

Stoll says witnesses felt a strong gust of wind, then the branch broke, sending it into tents setup below.

Two were taken to Wichita Hospitals in critical condition, another in serious condition. One person was taken to William Newton Hospital in Winfield for treatment of their injuries, and another person who was hurt refused to be taken to the hospital.

Stoll believes those who were hurt may have been a part of the Derby swim team, and all were adults.

The rest of the swim meet was canceled for the day, they were to continue the meet on Saturday.
