Tammy S. Rayl, 52, Wellington, has been identified as the woman killed Tuesday in the accident on 11th Rd. in Cowley County.

Sheriff Don Read said Rayl was northbound when her vehicle left the east side of the roadway, entered the ditch and struck an embankment on the north edge of a waterway. There were no signs of swerve marks or braking on the road.

It is possible Rayl fell asleep or suffered a medical condition prior to the crash, Read said, but the true cause of the accident might never be known. It was not immediately clear whether the woman was wearing her seat belt.

A Wellington woman died after a single vehicle crash Tuesday afternoon west of Ark City on the Cowley, Sumner County Line.

Around 1:15p.m. Tuesday, crews with the Ark City Fire Department and the Cowley County Sheriff’s Office were called to the area of 11th and 302nd for the report of an accident. That stretch of road better know as the casino road.

Someone driving the road had seen a red pickup in a ditch, and found one person inside.

Deputies say the 57-year-old woman found inside the truck had been dead for around an hour before emergency responders arrived on scene.

The woman, who was not identified by name because next of kin have not been notified, is from Wellington.

Deputy’s say they are still investigating, and cannot determine why the truck went into the culvert. Captain Jeff Moore said the truck was heading north on 11th, but there were no signs of breaks being used before it veered right, becoming semi-airborne before landing in the culvert.

Moore says there are no indications that alcohol played a factor in the accident.
